The Davis High boys golf team will be facing some of its toughest competition as it plays an 18-hole playoff tournament Monday.
The sectional tournament features seven other teams — representing the top two teams from their respective divisions — including Jesuit, Oak Ridge, Vacaville, Will C. Wood, Franklin, Granite Bay and Del Oro.
Davis will be sending six top-notch players to this tournament — Chase Dossa, Michael Chen, Preston Walchli, Cyrrus Espino, Patrick Cajandig and Spencer Salk.
After an excellent regular season that saw the Devils capture the No. 1 seed in their division, the locals enter this final competition with high hopes, and for good reason. In recent years, the Blue Devils have never finished lower than fifth, with a high finish of second two years ago.
“We always have a chance, like everyone else, but I think we can do very well this year,” said DHS coach Karl Ronning.
And while DHS is feeling confident, the nature of the sport means the squad’s biggest competition is itself.
“Golf is different because you don’t go directly against the other team; there is no defense,” Ronning said.
For Davis to win the tournament, all of its players must be in top form. The top five scores are counted for each team, but with this much talent on the links, the team that wins will need to post strong scores from top to bottom.
“We just need to play the best that we possibly can and see how it shakes out,” Ronning said.
