DHS boys make volleyball playoff statement

It wasn’t easy, but in the end it was satisfying.

The Davis High boys volleyball team needed five games on Thursday at Elk Grove, but eventually the Blue Devils finished off a victory that made coach Julie Crawford feel much better about their Sac-Joaquin Section playoff chances.

“We finished with a 6-4 record (in the Delta Valley Conference), so I’m pretty confident we will be in,” said Crawford, who led DHS to the postseason in 2012.

The SJS will announced its 2013 playoff participants Friday.

For the Devils on Thursday, it was a matter of survival as they played their second five-game match in three days. After taking a 2-1 lead on the Thundering Herd, Davis dropped the fourth game, 25-12, setting up the deciding set — where it beat Elk Grove, 15-7.

“It’s been a pretty intense week for us and I know the guys were tired,” Crawford said. “That’s why I’m so proud of how they came together to get it done in the fifth game.

“Those 15-point fifth-games are short so you don’t have room to make mistakes.”

Carrying the Blue Devils throughout the night were freshman Nick Simons and senior Dan Bonetti. Libero Mike Basso also was a strong contributor.

“Mikey really played well,” Crawford added. “He starting to be very consistent with his service and passing.”
