ELK GROVE — Five days after playing Grant to a tie in near gale-force winds, the Davis High boys soccer team took advantage of calmer skies on Tuesday, going on the road to rout Laguna Creek 9-0.
The Blue Devils had several offensive standouts, led by junior D.J. Villegas who had a hat trick. Senior Brian Birt and junior Raunak Manandhar added two goals apiece, and single tallies came from seniors Rami Rashmawi and Alexander Nelson, as DHS (8-3-3) improved to 2-0-1 in Delta Valley Conference play.
The Devil defense, meanwhile, posted its second shutout in three DVC matches.
Davis junior Joe Rainer got the assist on Villegas’ first goal, sending the ball into the box where Villegas won it, then slotted it inside the back post. The U.S. Junior National Team member followed by sneaking in a free kick for his second tally, then completed his trifecta off an assist from Nelson.
Birt’s two goals featured a solo effort that he finished off with a beautiful shot to the upper corner, and a goal off an assist from Nelson.
Rainer also assisted on one of Manandhar’s strikes, then Manandhar “beat the whole team” for his next goal, according to Blue Devil coach Alex Park, who added that Rashmawi’s tally — off an assist from sophomore Isaiah Alba — was “an absolute banger.”
Manandhar then sent a perfect ball to Nelson, who used a great finish to get his goal.
DHS stays on the road to face Monterey Trail on Thursday, then plays at rival Jesuit on Saturday at 8 p.m.
