DHS boys start busy soccer week with a win

KENTFIELD — All the preseason practices and scrimmages are over and the Davis High boys soccer team celebrated the start of its season with a 3-1 win Tuesday at Marin Catholic.

The victory marked the start of a flurry of early-season Blue Devil matches, as a home contest against Napa on Wednesday (4 p.m. at Yudin Field) and a tournament this weekend in Santa Rosa also are on the docket.

In beating the Wildcats, the locals actually fell behind 1-0 early. But before the first half ended, DHS senior Rami Rashmawi had set up classmate Alexander Nelson for the equalizer.

Rashmawi tallied himself early in the second period — off an assist from junior Daniel Perez — then 11th-grader Pablo Guarnizo capped the Devil scoring when he beat the MCHS defense himself.

Though the Davis offensive wasn’t humming on all cylinders yet, the play-making of Rashmawi and the creativity of D.J. Villegas — on offense and defense — were enough to win the day.

Coach Alex Park expects the competition to be much tougher as the week goes on.

“It should be a good game against Napa,” said the second-year mentor. “Hopefully we will do well and carry that confidence into the Bay City Classic this weekend.”
