The four-time defending section champion Davis High boys tennis team is used to winning Delta Valley Conference matches 9-0, especially if the Blue Devils play with their best lineup.
But with the DVC slate starting early this spring — Monday’s match against Monterey Trail was DHS’ first other than the traditional season-opening tournament in Fresno — Devil coach Dale Hersch is still looking to find his top nine. This, as well as the fact that top player Glenn Hull is nursing a back injury, had Hersch trying some different things against the Mustnags — and Davis still won 8-1.
After Tommy Luu got MTHS’ only victory, beating Isaac Yee at No. 1, the Blue Devil depth took over as Phil Glazer, Isaac Zhang, Sean Mishra, Earl Breedon and Kenneth Chow all netted wins.
The locals were even more dominant in doubles as Manraj Gill and Sean Maroney blanked their Mustang opponents, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. DHS’ Chase Kellison and Bob Li grabbed a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and Chris Chinn teamed with Sam Yoder at No. 3 to take a 6-1, 6-2 win.
