SACRAMENTO — Luck of the draw doesn’t quite fit. Call it the skill of the draw.

The Davis High girls lacrosse team won 18 of 25 face-offs Tuesday — 11 of the wins coming from junior standout Sarah Bloise — and it was the difference in a 13-10 road victory over St. Francis at Mather Field.

“We got a good road win (Tuesday),” said Blue Devil coach Jenn Morris. “The biggest help of the night was our dominating performance on draw controls. When you are winning the draw, it makes everything a lot easier.”

DHS (7-7, 5-2 Sacramento Valley Lacrosse Conference) used a big run early in the second half, then held off a late charge by the Troubadours. The Devils have two regular-season matches remaining — including a Wednesday (6 p.m.) game at Casa Roble — and Morris said the locals are still in the mix for a playoff berth.

On Tuesday, Bloise led the Davis offense with five goals and freshman phenoms Camille Renaud and Nicole Pugh each had hat tricks.

Single goals from senior Lydia Gegan and sophomore Abby Meyer completed the Blue Devil scoring, while the defense of senior Emmanuel Cordier and sophomore Anna Belenis was vital to the DHS cause.

“Our defense came up with enough big stops in the second half,” Morris said. “St. Francis is a good team and we matched up well against them (Tuesday). 

“We have a few things that we will continue to work on improving, but all in all we are playing some good lacrosse right now.”
