When the Davis High girls volleyball team got its Delta Valley Conference season started on Thursday at Franklin, observers probably couldn’t even tell that the Blue Devils were playing without two starters.
It wasn’t just that the locals defeated the Wildcats, 25-8, 25-17, 25-7 with senior middle Jenn Blanc joining classmate Stephanie Siu in street clothes with season-ending injuries. What was most impressive was that there wasn’t a weak link on the floor.
“We try not to dwell on it and I just try to encourage someone else to step up into that position,” said DHS head coach Julie Crawford. “We are lucky to have really well-rounded players so we have people that can step in.”
As with most teams that face key injuries, the Devils will rely on newcomers to fill the actual void in the lineup and veterans to raise their games and pick up slack. On Thursday, those two needs were filled by sophomore Maya Gilardo and senior Angelina Leigh.
“Maya Gilardo played really well as one of the players filling in (for Blanc in the middle),” Crawford said. “She is very athletic.
“Angelina Leigh had a great all-around game. She helped lead our team and was very consistent.”
The Blue Devils, who improved to 16-6 overall with the victory, have home matches next week, both starting at 6 p.m. Grant is in town Tuesday, with Laguna Creek visiting next Thursday.
