DHS fall sport tryout, practice schedules released

As summer gets into full laze mode for most area kids, Davis High School athletes continue to burn the midnight oil.

From showcase basketball tournaments to lacrosse camps and club volleyball and softball, Blue Devils playing sports have tons of opportunities to keep their favorite pursuits going almost year-round.

Now, DHS officials have released the fall sports tryout schedule so ninth- through 12th-grade competitors can plan their August calendars.

Here’s a look at the nine fall sports, their coaches, some pre-participation requirements and practice/tryout times.

Practice starts Aug. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Pool solar panels. Team training camp is slated for Aug. 18-21 in Soda Springs. Beginning Aug. 22, practice is 4-6 p.m. every day after school in Community Park.

Field hockey — Varsity coach Sandie Marotti-Huckins, junior varsity coach is to be determined. Contact Marotti-Huckins at sandie@marottiperformancegroup.com.

Tryouts will be conducted Aug. 9-10 from 8-9:30 a.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Beaton Field on the DHS campus. Marotti asks athletes to have shin guards, water and mouth pieces. Practice begins Aug. 13 with time and location to be announced.

Conditioning and testing (no equipment or pads) goes Aug. 1-3. A mandatory parent/player meeting is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 5 in the DHS library, then two-a-day practices begin Aug. 6 (8-11 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.). Blue/White Scrimmage is at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium on Aug. 18 (time TBA) with practices becoming one a day on Aug. 20.

Wildhorse Golf Course is the venue for practices, which begin Aug. 6 from 9-11 a.m. According to Mohr, additional team information can be found at www.davisgolfacademy.com. Players must own golf clubs and be able to complete nine holes of golf carrying their own bags.

Tryouts run Aug. 13-17 (8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.) at Yudin Field behind DHS. Team selection will be by Aug. 17. Yudin says players must bring cleats, shin guards and water.

Girls tennis — Coach Sally Hosley. Contact her at sallyhosley@hotmail.com.

Tryouts will begin at the Community Park Tennis Complex Aug. 9 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. They continue through Aug. 17. Team practice starts Aug. 20 (3:50 p.m.).

Tryouts are Aug. 6-10 in the Davis High south gym. Ninth-graders report at 8 a.m. for two hours, then 10- through 12th-graders will workout from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crawford tells hopefuls to “wear comfortable clothes and bring water and knee pads.” Team practices begin Aug. 13 at a time to be announced.

Beginning Aug, 20, practices are Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4-6 p.m. at Arroyo Pool. A parents’ meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. at the pool.

Girls water polo — Coach Doug Wright can be reached at dwright@djusd.net.

Practice starts Aug. 20 at Arroyo Pool, going 4-6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. A parents’ meeting is planned for Aug. 20 at 6 p.m.

All athletes must be involved in concussion baseline testing, which has a permission form at www.davisseniorhigh.net. DHS officials suggest that parents or athletes contact their sport’s coach for time and dates that are set up for each team — or register individually at www.signupgenius.com/go/8050D4EAFAF2B0-impact.
