As summer gets into full laze mode for most area kids, Davis High School athletes continue to burn the midnight oil.

From showcase basketball tournaments to lacrosse camps and club volleyball and softball, Blue Devils playing sports have tons of opportunities to keep their favorite pursuits going almost year-round.

Now, DHS officials have released the fall sports tryout schedule so ninth- through 12th-grade competitors can plan their August calendars.

Here’s a look at the nine fall sports, their coaches, some pre-participation requirements and practice/tryout times.

Cross country — Coach Bill Gregg. Contact him at williamjgregg@aol.com.

Practice starts Aug. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Pool solar panels. Team training camp is slated for Aug. 18-21 in Soda Springs. Beginning Aug. 22, practice is 4-6 p.m. every day after school in Community Park.

Field hockey — Varsity coach Sandie Marotti-Huckins, junior varsity coach is to be determined. Contact Marotti-Huckins at sandie@marottiperformancegroup.com.

Tryouts will be conducted Aug. 9-10 from 8-9:30 a.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Beaton Field on the DHS campus. Marotti asks athletes to have shin guards, water and mouth pieces. Practice begins Aug. 13 with time and location to be announced.

Football — Varsity coach Steve Smyte can be contacted at ssmyte@djusd.net. Email JV coach Mike Satre at masatre@ucdavis.edu. Contact freshman coach Adam Perez at adam7@me.com.

Conditioning and testing (no equipment or pads) goes Aug. 1-3. A mandatory parent/player meeting is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 5 in the DHS library, then two-a-day practices begin Aug. 6 (8-11 a.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.). Blue/White Scrimmage is at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium on Aug. 18 (time TBA) with practices becoming one a day on Aug. 20.

Girls golf — Coach Rhonda Mohr. Contact her at rmohr@davisgolfacademy.com.

Wildhorse Golf Course is the venue for practices, which begin Aug. 6 from 9-11 a.m. According to Mohr, additional team information can be found at www.davisgolfacademy.com. Players must own golf clubs and be able to complete nine holes of golf carrying their own bags.

Boys soccer — Varsity coach Ashley Yudin can be reached at ashyudin@gmail.com. Contact JV coach Alex Park at aapark@ucdavis.edu.

Tryouts run Aug. 13-17 (8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.) at Yudin Field behind DHS. Team selection will be by Aug. 17. Yudin says players must bring cleats, shin guards and water.

Girls tennis — Coach Sally Hosley. Contact her at sallyhosley@hotmail.com.

Tryouts will begin at the Community Park Tennis Complex Aug. 9 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. They continue through Aug. 17. Team practice starts Aug. 20 (3:50 p.m.).

Boys water polo — Coach Tracy Stapleton. Contact him at tstapleton@djusd.net.

Beginning Aug, 20, practices are Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4-6 p.m. at Arroyo Pool. A parents’ meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. at the pool.
