DHS footballers open at Yuba City

The Marc Hicks coaching era begins Friday night at Yuba City, when Davis High takes on the Honkers at 7:30 p.m.

If Hicks the prep coach is half as good as Hicks the running back, Blue Devils fans will have a lot to cheer about. (The 47-year-old was among the top recruits in the nation when he graduated from DHS in 1985)

Coming off of a strong 5-5 campaign under former coach Steve Smyte, the 2013 Devils are looking to run the ball down opponents’ throats. And they seem to have the tools to do it: an offensive line that coaches say is as good as any they’ve seen at Davis in a long time, along with a deep group of running backs led by Winfred Roberson (803 yards rushing and nine TDs last year).

The locals, however, might be meeting their match on the ground Friday night as the Honkers also have a big-time rushing attack. Last season, YC ran for seven touchdowns in a 48-21 win over the Blue Devils at Brown Stadium and went on to go 9-2.

DHS will need defensive linemen Jonah Williams, Nash Nunes, Bailey Murray and Zac Slavich, as well as linebacker Brendan MacDonald, Eli Castro and Marvin Grant, at their best to slow down the Honkers.

With both teams featuring strong running games, the Devils are hoping junior quarterback Quentin Jones, named the starter on Wednesday, can be the difference.
