DHS gets look at future in lopsided win

By April 1, 2011

When pitcher Alex Barbaria and catcher Stephanie Cello cruised through three innings of work in a 16-1 shellacking of visiting Grant on Thursday, Davis High softball fans caught a glimpse of the future.

“Alex will be my starting pitcher next year,” Blue Devils coach George Meagher said after his team hammered out 18 hits while allowing only one.

Barbaria came on in relief of starting hurler Kaitlyn Grim, who went two perfect innings before giving way with a 12-0 lead. Barbaria’s three innings were enough to provide the pitcher’s first varsity win.

A 10-run first-inning settled things early against the Pacers (0-5). Megan Winton paced the locals with a 3-for-3 afternoon, scoring twice and driving home three runs with a pair of doubles. Davis mercy-ruled its visitors in the Delta Valley Conference opener.

Melanie Habib, Rita Allen-Sutter, Haley Cameron, Grim, Chelsea Brent and Cello all smacked two hits for the 6-4 Blue Devils.

Next Tuesday, Davis hosts Laguna Creek at 4:15 p.m. in another DVC outing.
