DHS golfers get their third win of the season

Davis High boys golf coach Karl Ronning was proud of his guys for the way they performed in winning the Yuba City/Woodland Invitational on Tuesday at Yocha Dehe.

But the veteran coach was even happier with the Blue Devils’ attitude after the victory — DHS’ third of the nonleague season — with the first Delta Valley Conference tournament set for Monday.

“The kids are celebrating the win but they are also talking about going out and working hard in practice this week to get ready for Monday,” Ronning told The Enterprise.

The Devils had reason to celebrate, after shooting a 388 at Yoche Dehe to defeat second-place squads Napa and Vacaville by 13 strokes.

Senior Chase Dossa led the way for the locals, shooting a blistering 2-under 70 and missing medalist honors by one stroke. He settled for a strong second-place finish, while teammate Preston Walchli was fourth with his 74.

“Preston really put it all together (Monday),” Ronning reported.

Behind Walchli were Michael Chen and Cyrrus Espino, two Davis players who impressed their coach by carding 79’s despite not having their best days. Andrew Arnheiter rounded out the Blue Devil scorers with an 86 in just his third varsity tournament.

“What they are learning is how to fight through adversity, not let a round get away from them,” Ronning said.

Keaton Mohar made his varsity tournament debut, shooting a 93 as DHS’ nonscoring player.

The Devils’ DVC opener on Monday will be hosted by Laguna Creek at the Bartley Cavanaugh course near the Sacramento River.
