DHS has high hopes as Speck tourney starts Thursday

At the 2012 Dorothy Speck Memorial girls basketball tournament, host Davis High got by its first-round opponent and posted a blowout win in the semifinals before running into a buzzsaw (Miramonte) in the championship contest.

When this year’s Speck tourney begins Thursday, the Lady Blue Devils — who feature most of the same players — hope to take the next step and win the title.

The 2013 field includes Chico, Brookside Christian, Rio Americano, Carondelet, West Campus, Campolindo and Granite Bay — DHS’ first-round opponent at 8 p.m. Thursday.

“There are a lot of good teams coming, but I feel we are going to do well,” Devil coach Karen Foster said earlier this week. “The girls are ready.”

Though they are officially 0-0, the locals did run all over Vacaville, 81-64, in a CIF Foundation Game on Monday. In that outing, junior Caitlin Mazzoleni scored 20 points for the Lady Blue Devils, classmate Emma Stenz had 12 points with 15 rebounds and Anna Belenis dished out 11 assists.
