Three Blue Devils tallied three or more times — including Camille Renaud’s six-goal, one-assist explosion — as the Davis High girls lacrosse team went on the road to defeat Christian Brothers, 16-14, in a nonconference matchup.
Though several Devils had strong outing, like senior Sarah Bloise (four goals and three assists) and sophomore Nicole Pugh (hat trick), it was a frusterating game as the officiating forced the Davis (5-5) away from its preferred mode of play.
“The referees were calling the game in a very stop and go manner, with a lot of penalties being called on both teams. It made for a very choppy game, definitely not a style we like to play,” said Blue Devil coach Jenn Morris. “Our team was very frustrated, but we played through it was much as we could. Fortunately, we were able to get control of the ball in the closing minutes to play a nice slow down game of keep away that ended with a win.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take the win.”
Single tallies from senior Ellie Meinert and juniors Anna Belenis and Isabella Babich helped in that victory, but Morris would have liked to see her defense allow fewer goals.
“We’ll need to work on tightening up our defense heading into our (Sacramento Valley League game against Oak Ridge on Friday night at Brown Stadium),” said the coach. “They are a very physical team, and we need to be ready to handle that pressure and still maintain control of the ball. We’re expecting it to be a great game.”
First face-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
DHS boys volleyball
A slow start by the visiting Blue Devils gave Monterey Trail just enough momentum to hold off DHS in a five-set Delta League match on Tuesday.
The 23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 18-25, 16-14 loss sent the Devils (9-5) to 4-3 in conference and into a three-way tie for third place.
“There are four teams going to the playoffs from our league and the boys really want to go — it’s a senior-heavy team,” said Davis coach Jordon Friend. “So that’s what we will focus on for the rest of the season.”
Focus is something the locals could have used in the second and third games on Tuesday, but Friend said the Blue Devils were making uncharacteristic mistakes in both serving and hitting.
However, down 2-1, DHS began to show some life.
“We came out really slow and then started to play better, but it was too late,” Friend explained.”One thing I am proud of is when we were down two sets to one, the boys dug deep in that fourth game and showed a lot of heart.”
The coach had special praise for seniors Dominic Fannjiang and Evan Meerscheidt.
“Evan attacked really well as well as running the offense,” Friend said. “And Dominic had an amazing game with 29 digs. A kid on the other team leads the conference in kills and hitting percentage and Dominic refused to let the ball hit the floor.”
