DHS tryout schedule updated; physical packets due

Nine Davis High varsity teams and a host of junior varsity and one freshman squad are about to begin tryouts and practices early next month.

Prep athletes must have their sports physical packets completed (and signed) and returned to the DHS Athletic Department before tryouts begin. Packets can be submitted at DHS from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Thursday, Aug. 7, at the school’s north gym lobby.

Here’s a look at the tryout/practice schedules and coaching staff of each Blue Devil fall sports team …

Cross country — Coach Bill Gregg (email:[email protected]). Practice starts Aug. 18 at the 6:30 p.m. at the Community Pool solar panels. Team training at Soda Springs is tentatively slated for Aug. 21-24 at Soda Springs. Practice Aug. 25-26 will start at the Community Pool solar panels with normal workout hours changing to 4-6 p.m. weekdays beginning Aug. 27.

Field hockey — Varsity coach Sandie Marotti-Huckins (email: [email protected]). JV coach Frank Marotti. Tryouts are Aug. 11 and 13 (7-9:30 a.m. and 7-9 p.m.) and Aug. 12 (7-9:30 a.m. at Brown Stadium on campus at DHS. Marotti says hopefuls should “bring shin guards, mouth guards and water.” Practice begins Aug. 14, 7 a.m.).

Football — Head coach John Wiley (email: [email protected]). JV coach Mike Satre (email: [email protected]). During the week of Aug. 11, practice is held at 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The following week, practice goes from 5-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Scrimmage for varsity and JV squads will be conducted Aug. 23 at Folsom High and Aug. 28 versus Sacramento. Exact times to be announced.

Girls golf — Coach Rhonda Mohr (email: [email protected]). Practice starts Aug. 18 at Wildhorse Golf Course (9-11 a.m. For updated and ongoing session information, visit www.davisgolfacademy.com, DHS golf team tab).

Mohr says golfers must own their clubs and be able to walk nine holes carrying their gear.

Boys soccer — Varsity coach Alex Park (email: [email protected]). JV coach Jesus Mata (email: [email protected]) Tryouts run Aug. 11-15 (Monday and Wednesday, 8-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8-10 a.m.) Tryouts are at Nugget Field.

Parks asks that athletes being “shin guards, cleats and water … do not bring a soccer ball.”

Girls tennis — Coach Sally Hosley (email: [email protected]). Tryouts start Aug. 18, 3-5 p.m. at the Community Park Tennis Complex. Tryouts go through Aug. 26 (no sessions Aug. 23 or 24). Practice commences Aug. 27 (3:50-5:30 p.m.).

Girls volleyball — Varsity coach Julie Crawford (email: [email protected]). JV coach Jordon Friend (email: [email protected]). Freshman coach Brett Andersen (email: [email protected]).

Tryouts run Aug 11-15 in DHS south gym. Ninth-graders go from 8 to 10 a.m., 10th- to 12th-graders from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crawford advises athletes to wear comfortable clothes and bring knee pads and water bottles. Once teams are selected, practice starts Aug. 18 (times to be announced).

Boys water polo — Coach Tracy Stapleton (email: [email protected]).

Tryouts start Aug. 18 (5-7 p.m.) at Arroyo Pool. After practice on Aug. 19, rosters will be announced. There also will be a parents’ meeting at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at Arroyo.

Girls water polo — Coach Doug Wright (email: [email protected]).

Practice starts Aug. 18 at Arroyo Pool with workouts going Monday through Friday (7:30-9 p.m.). A parents’ meeting will be conducted Aug. 18 (6:30-7:30 p.m.).
