DHS boys take 15th at big event

October 24, 2010 |

As it heads into the final week of the regular season, the Davis boys water polo team got to tune up for the postseason, placing 15th in what many consider to be the top high school tournament in the country.

After falling to the eventual champions, Mater Dei of Santa Ana, in their first game, the Blue Devils finished off the event with a 16-5 victory over Palo Alto.

Though going 1-3, DHS lost a match in overtime and another by just two goals.

In their second game, the Devils matched up against the best team in the North Coast Section, Acalanes, and nearly pulled the upset. Staging an exciting comeback, Davis fell just short, 11-9 in overtime.

The Blue Devils then dropped a 14-12 thriller to Villa Park, ranked 10th in Orange County, before

defeating Palo Alto.

Wade Allen (12 goals on the weekend) and Connor Stapleton (eight) paced DHS, with Noah Friedman, Tre Moynihan, Paul Dailey, Brandon Rueda and Mark Ward all contributing on the offensive end of the pool.

In addition, Nick Abplanalp had a very good tournament in goal for the Devils (14-11).

DHS will finish the season with a home game against Ponderosa on Wednesday at Arroyo Pool.
