It was the NorCal Championship Tournament, and for the third time since 2003, the Davis High girls water polo team came away with the crown Ñ beating Monte Vista in the finals on Saturday in Atherton.
ÒThis is a huge confidence boost,Ó DHS coach Doug Wright said. ÒWeÕve lost to Monte Vista many times. ItÕs finally like we have that monkey off our backs.Ó
Wright said his girls Òhad to play perfect because they have the No. 1 player in the nation, Maggie Stephens.Ó
Play perfect they did, beating MVHS, 6-5, and limiting Stephens to one goal.
The Blue Devils (27-1) avenged their only loss of the season (6-4 at Arroyo Pool). Now Monte Vista has but one setback.
DHS also topped St. MaryÕs (Stockton), 15-4, and St. Francis (Mt. View), 12-4. Then, the Devils got past two-time tournament champ Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton), 8-5, to make the championship match.
Keelia Houston scored nine goals on the weekend and Elsie Fullerton added eight. Wright said Òvirtually everyone contributed.Ó
ÒI think this makes us playoff-ready,Ó the veteran coach added.
Davis is expected to play Beyer in a first-round Sac-Joaquin Section playoff game on Saturday at Johansen High in Modesto.
The Blue Devils are the defending section champions.
