DHS girls play well in defeat

By October 28, 2010

Even in a loss, there was a lot to like about the Davis High girls volleyball teamÕs performance on Wednesday against Monterey Trail.

Gaining confidence as the match went along, the Blue Devils impressed their head coach Leigh Whitmire by playing good defense, being aggressive at the net and serving well.

ÒIÕm really proud of everybody; this was the best we have played in a while,Ó the veteran DHS coach said after her team fell 25-15, 27-25, 25-16. ÒIt is unfortunate that we had to lose, but the girls were really having fun out there and playing as a team.Ó

The leadership of senior Cassie Varland may have had something to do with DavisÕ improved play, and Whitmire said she played a great all-around game.

The Devils will finish the season with three games next week, two of them in the friendly confines of the DHS gym. Davis, which still has a chance to make the playoffs, is at Elk Grove on Monday, then hosts Kennedy on Tuesday. Senior Night on Wednesday against Franklin could have a huge impact on the Delta Valley Conference standings.
