DLL AAA roundup: Stukarov, Kinney lead Astros to a 10-9 win

As is often the case this time of year in the Little League season, AAA bats are in full swing as balls have been flying around the Davis complex.

Many of the division’s winners scored in double digits as hitters of most teams smacked the ball hard.

Here’s a look at recent action …

Royals 10, Reds 9 — Nikita Stukarov and Liam Kinney paced the winners with two hits apiece as a five-run last inning was the difference.

Kinney’s daring steal of home was a highlight.

Maia Romero, Jake Wilkinson and Kinney pitched for the Royals. It was catches by Stukarov and Romero in the bottom of the fifth that cut short the Reds’ three-run rally.

Reds’ hurler Alden McCabe had three strikeouts and made two sparkling fielding plays in his two innings of work.

Ethan Guerrero, Jared Umphress, Baron Rosario, Connor Lynch and Dylan Raven (who had three hits) fueled the Reds’ last-ditch comeback. Jamie MacNear also contributed offensively.

Cubs 19, Pirates 9 — Ben Simon, Sam Reising and John Churchward each had two hits and Brady Mauro, Kyler Andolina, Christian Davis, Ryan Firpo, Gizaw Baker and Keaghan Morrissey each added to an attack that saw the winners score at least four runs in each of the four innings.

Every Cub reached base safely. Simon, Reising, Ben Disney and Thai Mai-Clark pitched well.

Rockies 12, Padres 6 — Nick Viatella’s double began a four-run Padre rally in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough.

In the big inning, Immanuel Campos, Aidan Sheehan and Jet Aquino each chimed in at the plate. Aquino scored twice on the day as Selassie Campos stole two bases and scored.

Sheehan, Selassie Campos, Connor O’Hara and Viatella were solid mound contributors.

Giants 8, Astros 5 — Aidan Crawford went 2-for-2, scoring twice, and James Davis threw two scoreless innings while striking out five for the winners.

Eli Ziser was 2-for-2 with a walk and Justin Miller mashed a double.

Mateo DeLeon, coming off an injury, made his season debut with a single and a walk.

Eli Grote threw a shutout inning and teamed with Crawford on a double play.

Orioles 12, Angels 0 — Will Ackerman’s last-inning grand slam was the coup d’grace as the O’s got terrific pitching in support of a big offensive display.

Brian Chin fanned three in his two-inning start, Jaron Erba struck out a pair of Angels in two solid innings and Siddarth Chilamkur cut down his three hitters on six pitches.

Javon McQueen had two RBIs, while Keoni Chaidez, Mateo Rios, Chilamkur, Kurt Fischer, Erba, Chin and Brandon Damian all added to the Orioles’ hit parade.

Teo Honda-Scully and Jacob Tujo led the Angels at the plate. Tujo, Spencer Carr and Devin Gagnon got a runner out in a rundown and the Halos threw out three other attempted base stealers.

Cubs 3, Giants 3 — In a seven-inning pitchers’ duel, both teams tallied a run in the final frame to tie.

For the Cubs, exceptional pitching performances were turned in by Ryan Firpo, Gizaw Bsker, Christian Davis and Bekele Baker. With John Churchward catching five innings, the Cubs allowed only five hits.

It was Bekele Baker’s hit that knotted the game in the last of the seventh. Two hits by Davis, Sam Reising and Gizaw Baker were augmented by safeties from Churchward and Firpo.

Kyler Andolina, Ben Disney, Ben Simon, Thai Mai-Clark and Brady Mauro were slick afield.

Aidan Crawford singled, tripled and swiped home for the Giants, who also saw Eli Grote and Mitchell Fong whack singles.

But it was terrific pitching by Olivia Kim, Finn McCrory and Ray Oldham that kept the Giants in the game. Oldham’s tag out of a runner at the plate sent the game into extra innings.

Astros 9, Royals 7 — Kekoa Castillo tripled, scored twice and drove in a run for the winners.

Anthony Wright added an RBI double and Ethan Cavanaugh singled twice, scored and drove in a run.

Zach Letcher and Colin Grow singled in runs and Louie DeGroot spanked a hit and came home.

Maia Romero singled with the bases loaded in the Royals’ first. Willy Linthicum and Liam Kinney later contributed key hits.

Notes: Thanks to DLL official Brad Mauro for coordinating submission of weekly game summaries. If you don’t see a recap of your favorite team’s performance, remind that squad’s scorekeeper or coach to turn in review sheets at the facility office.
