HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Taking the court just two days after a physically draining loss to No. 1 Connecticut, the UC Davis women’s basketball team played Hofstra tough into Saturday’s second half before the host Pride used a big run to take control.
In the 76-57 loss at the Mack Sports, Aggie sophomore Alyson Doherty exploded for a career-high 24 points, while classmate Celia Marfone added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Doherty made 9-of-16 field goals, scored 15 of her game-high total in the second half and added five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Marfone was 4-for-8 from the field and made 2-of-4 from long distance, but UCD (2-6) was ice cold from 3-point range as the rest of the team was 0-for-26.
After a 3-point play from Doherty with 10:55 to play brought the Aggies to within three at 42-39, Hofstra (4-3) went on a decisive 19-3 run.
UCD went without a field goal for almost five minutes before a 3-pointer by Marfone jumpstarted an 8-0 burst, cutting the lead to 11 with 3:51 remaining. That was as close as the Aggies would come as the Pride answered with an 8-0 spurt to put the game away.
Marfone’s double-double was UCD’s second of the year (Doherty did it against San Jose State) and Doherty’s 20-point game was the Aggies’ third of the season.
For Hofstra, Anma Onyeuku scored 17 of her team-high 21 points in the second half to lead the charge and added six rebounds.
UCD has eight days off before heading to Moraga for a Sunday (1 p.m.) game against St. Mary’s.
