The Davis High girls track and field team didn’t exactly ease into Delta Valley Conference competition — it was more like a headlong dive.
The Blue Devil girls dominated Elk Grove, 127-0, while the boys meet was a bit closer with DHS winning, 91-41, on Wednesday afternoon.
“Overall, we were pleased with the day and proud of our athletes,” said Devils coach Spencer Elliott.
The local girls featured two triple winners — Sophie Meads and Rose Stephens — saw freshman Caitlin Mazzoleni come close to a school record and got a pair of victories from Cara Meadow-Smith.
Mazzoleni high jumped 5 feet, 3 inches, just an inch short of Davis’ all-time mark.
“That is an impressive mark, not just for a freshman but for anyone,” Elliott said.
Meads ran a 5:15.3 to win the 1,600 meters, came back with a 2:28.6 to capture the 800 and completed her hat trick with a victory in the 3,200. She crossed the finish line in 12:15.6.
As for Stephens, the junior set a personal best when she won the 300 hurdles in 48.4 and added first-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (17.87) and the long jump (15-4).
In the field, Meadows-Smith made her presence felt in the throws, as she was first in discus, at 94-4, and shot put, with a 29-6.5. Danielle Gantar (9 feet in the pole vault), Zoe Hunt-Murray (4-6, high jump) and Adriana Defty (32-11, triple jump) were other field winners for the Blue Devils.
Back on the track, the DHS girls won both relays and got race victories from Hannah Krovetz in the 400 (1:00.9), Dontella Stanley in the 100 (14.68) and Han-ah Sumner. Sumner, who took second place in the 400 where she also ran a personal best, set a new PR with her winning time of 27.4 in the 200, while Krovetz was second in both the 800 and 200.
The Devil boys were paced by double wins from Jack Scranton, Nate Stenson and Ian Bloise.
Scranton, who also won the 3,200 in 9:47.4, edged teammate Ryan Greenough in the 1,600. Scranton ran a 4:29.5, while Greenough went 4:35.7.
“Jack Scranton and Ryan Greenough are running great 1,600s,” Elliott said.
Stenson won two jumping events for Davis, posting a 19-11 in the long jump and a 41-2 in the triple jump. Kevin Sorensen’s 6-foot leap was enough to capture the high jump.
Bloise doubled in the hurdle events, winning the 100 in 18.15 and the 300 in 44.22.
Elliott was impressed with Lee LeVerrier, who took second in the 200 by just one-hundreth of a second, then won the 400 in 50.45.
“Great day for Lee,” Elliott said. “(His) times are getting closer to what they’ll need to be to score points in sections and possibly qualify for state.”
Paul Mohr (2:04.5) edged teammate Andrew Croft (2:05) to capture the 800-meter race for the Blue Devils.
