Sure, the sun is shining brightly and the temperature remains in the mid-70s — however, at Davis High, it is time for athletes to seriously start thinking about winter sports.
Tryouts for the five middle-season squads are just around the corner — and there’s a lot to be done before the Blue Devils put their final winter rosters together.
DHS athletic director Dennis Foster has released a squad-by-squad look at coach contact information, tryout times and concussion screening.
Here’s the skinny …
Boys basketball — Tryouts start Nov. 5 with a workout from 4 to 6 p.m. in the North Gym at DHS, a Nov. 6 session (4 to 5:30 p.m.) in the South Gym and Nov. 7-9 practices to be announced. Junior varsity and freshman tryouts go from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5-6 at Harper Junior High with subsequent sessions to be announced.
Coaches: Dan Gonzalez ([email protected]), in his 14th season at the varsity level, Bob Silva (11th year in JV) at [email protected] and second-year freshman mentor Dino Clark ([email protected]).
Girls basketball — On Nov. 5 and 6 in the South Gym, varsity tryouts will be conducted from 5:30-7 p.m.
Junior varsity and freshman workouts will be Nov. 5-6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holmes Junior High. Additional tryout sessions will be announced.

Wrestling — Veteran coach Ty Brown ([email protected]) says practice begins Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. in the school’s Dance Room. “Participants should have wrestling shoes … and, remember, wrestling is a no-cut sport,” Brown adds.
Skiing — Bob Brewer returns as longtime coach and can be reached at [email protected]. Dry-land conditioning starts Nov. 5 in the South Gym (Monday and Fridays, 6:30 a.m.and Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m.)
Beginning in January, on-snow practice will be conducted on Sundays. Races — all in the Lake Tahoe region — are on Mondays.
Snowboarding — Under the direction of coach Marcia Heller ([email protected]), dry-land condition opens Nov. 5 on Mondays and Fridays from 6:15 to 7:30 a.m. at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium on campus at DHS.
Practice in the snow begins in mid-December with most workouts on Sundays through February. Six Monday races are slated and practices are conducted in and around Lake Tahoe.
Dennis Foster reminds all student-athletes that baseline computerized neurocognitive testing is require in order to participate in Blue Devil athletics. The testing became state law this year.
