Longtime UC Davis football coach Bob Biggs, who retired after last season, always said punter Colton Schmidt had an NFL leg. Now, it’s official.
Schmidt, who punted for the Aggies from 2009 to 2012 and also handled kickoff duties for part of his career, agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers and will report for training camp July 19 with the rest of the team’s rookies.
The 5-foot-11, 220-pounder from Bakersfield finished his UCD career as the best punter in school history, setting an all-time Aggie single-season record in each of his past two seasons (42.3 in 2011 and 44.5 last year) as well as the career mark of 41.1 yards per kick.
After a senior campaign during which more than half of his 63 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, Schmidt was named first team All-Big Sky Conference, his third consecutive all-league award.
“He was a game-changer,” Biggs said after last season. “You don’t often see that with a punter but Colton was a game-changer.”
