Davis High badminton standout Manvika Nancy edged teammate Siruo Zhang for the Monticello Empire League’s singles title as the conference held its season-ending tournament on Friday in Vacaville.

The Blue Devils finished third overall, ending the team portion of what coach Henrico Simanjuntak called a strong campaign.

“The season went very well,” Simanjuntak said. “During the season, the thing that made me most proud was beating Armijo, who finished first in the league last year. I have confidence that next year we can finish first because almost all of my best players (are returning).”

Nancy and Zhang will enter this weekend’s Sac-Joaquin Section finals as the top two seeds, with fellow DHS racketeers Robin Chen (No. 3) and Gwen Hsu (No. 6) also participating.

Notes: Bear Creek High in Stockton is hosting the section tournament on Friday and Saturday. … Rodriguez won the MEL tournament, with Armijo finishing second.
