The Davis High freshman baseball team had another strong week, twice beating second-place Pioneer, then dropping a thrilling nonleague contest to powerful Jesuit in extra innings.
The Blue Devils lost 8-4 to Jesuit.
After falling behind, 3-0 DHS was able to mount a rally started by walks to Kaysey England and Brendan MacDonald. After C.K. Hicks walked, Keaton Mohar and Zack Slavich singled to pull the Devils even.
Jesuit scored in the fourth and headed into the last of the seventh leading, 4-3.
But with a runner on second and the Devils down to their last strike, Hicks’ single drove in Matt Trask.
Despite brilliant catches by Jeremy Likes and Trey Golston, Jesuit was able to string four, two-out hits together to put the game away in the ninth, 8-4.
Next up was Pioneer — the only previous blemish on the Devils’ league record.
In winning 13-1, Davis jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first, thanks to singles from England, MacDonald, Trask and Hicks. In the second, the locals exploded for nine runs, highlighted by key hits by Josh Guerrero, Mohar, MacDonald and a double by Likes.
Starter Slavich was dominant on the mound, allowing one hit and one earned run while going the distance. A single by Tyler Roberts and a run in the fourth inning ended the scoring with a mercy-rule victory.
The Devils went to Pioneer the next day, this time winning, 11-3.
Davis got off to another great start, scoring three in the first behind England, Trask, Guerrero and Hicks singles. The Devils added two more in the third with four consecutive walks and an RBI single by Golston.
This time Pioneer stayed close by scoring three early runs of its own.
But Devil pitcher Trask would take control and send the Patriots down quietly in the next three frames. Davis punched home three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings — the outburst led by singles from Trask, Guerrero, Slavich, doubles by Guerrero and MacDonald and a triple by Golston.
England pitched a scoreless seventh.
“The guys really stepped up against (good) competition this week,” coach Mike Trask offered. “It was key to beat Pioneer twice. … The comeback against Jesuit really gave the guys some confidence.”
