It marked the return of the meet named in honor of Dewey Halden — the late, longtime Davis High coach, teacher and administrator.
If the ol’ professor had been around to watch the Blue Devil frosh/soph track and field teams compete last Saturday, he would have been very proud.
While no team scoring was kept, the young Devils were formidable in almost every event — especially on the girls side — in the renamed Halden Invitational at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium.
Danielle Gantar (8’0”) won the pole vault, finished second in the triple jump, then placed third in the high jump.
In the vault, Gantar’s DHS teammates Charlotte Rock and Kaity Honeychurch tied for third at 7-6.
Speedster Eva Dicker captured the 100-meter dash in a rapid 13.91, as well as helped the Blue Devil 4×100 girls (teaming with Megan Casey, Zoe Hunt-Murray and Rock) blaze to a second-place finish behind El Dorado in 54.25. El Dorado ran a winning time of 53.90.
Hunt-Murray’s 33-03 won the triple jump, with Ariana Young (30-05) in third to complete the DHS event sweep.
Lauren James (5:39.53) was second for the locals in the 1,600-meter race and Laura Daggett (13:18.13) was second in the 3,200.
Young (4-06) was second in the high jump and behind Gantar in fourth was Hunt-Murray.
“I am really pleased with the frosh/soph showing, especially the girls in the jumps,” DHS coach Spencer Elliott said afterward.
For the Blue Devil boys, Ben Crook captured the 400 and helped his 4×100 relay team (Maito Okamoto, Anthony Herrera and Spencer Lay-Haye) roll home fifth at 47.44.
