Poor shooting on a rainy Saturday cost the 15th-ranked UC Davis women’s water polo team in a 7-4 loss to No. 16 UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.

Junior Paige Oreglia and sophomore Allyson Hansen each scored two goals, but the Aggies shot just 4-for-29 at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.

Hansen and Oreglia each scored one 6-on-5 goal and one natural goal for UCD, which fell to 11-12. Sophomore Jessie Porter led the Gauchos (10-11) with two goals, but UCSB’s top performer was goalkeeper Mackenzie Brokaw, who posted 14 saves — including one against a five-meter penalty shot in the third period.

With her team down 2-0, Hansen drew a kickout, then converted off an assist from Ariel Arcidiacono to put the Aggies on the board with 2:34 left in first quarter.

UCD equalized early in second period, thanks in part to an exclusion drawn by Carla Tocchini at the first-quarter buzzer. Katrina Husted won the second-quarter sprint to maintain the 6-on-5 advantage, then Oreglia found the net 15 seconds later.

The Gauchos bounced back to take a 5-3 halftime lead, then held the Aggies to 1-for-15 shooting after intermission.

UCD’s lone home weekend of Big West play concludes Sunday at noon against No. 7 Cal State Northridge.
