It’s not often that a sophomore on the varsity team is praised for his experienced play, but the Davis High boys water polo team’s talented trio of Conrad McCarthy, Brad Nicholson and Jeff Stark are not ordinary 10th-graders.
After playing on the varsity squad last year, when the Blue Devils reached the section title game, the three sophomores are now playing like veterans.
McCarthy, a versatile utility player for DHS, showed off his experience in last weekend’s S & R Cup as the Devils faced some of the top competition in the state.
The Greiner Athlete of the Week played his best in his team’s two wins, including posting a hat trick in a 15-6 victory over Irvine. When Davis edged Acalanes, 10-9, in the 11th-place game, McCarthy had two key goals.
With single goals in one of the other tournament games and the Blue Devils’ 24-3 tune-up win over Franklin last Wednesday, McCarthy finished with a seven-goal week.
