Two seasons ago, Ashleigh Vandenbrink was a key complementary player on a Davis High girls basketball squad that went undefeated in Delta Valley Conference play to capture the league title.
As a junior in 2011-12, she took over as a team leader and did whatever the Blue Devils needed, including playing all over the floor.
Now that she is a senior, Vandenbrink has turned into a genuine star, and her performance in last weekend’s Dixon Ram Jam showed just that.
In earning MVP honors and leading DHS to the tournament title, the Greiner Athlete of the Week opened with a 19-point, seven-rebound outing to help the Devils hold off Vacaville, 64-61, last Wednesday.
Vandenbrink followed with 10 points, six boards, five assists and six steals in a blowout win over Roseville on Thursday, then had 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as Davis dropped Inderkum in Saturday’s championship game.
