In the NBA, players like Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams and Tony Parker have helped revolutionize the point guard position, making it less of a taboo for a floor general to also be a team’s top scorer.
The Davis High boys basketball team has its own version of a scoring point guard, and Hayden Russell was at his best at last weekend’s Luis Scattini Memorial Tournament in Salinas.
Competing against a strong field of players — including Palma’s 6-foot-6 guard Noah Allen, who is headed to UCLA in the fall — Russell was the event’s leading scorer with 88 total points.
After opening with 41 points in Thursday’s loss, the Greiner Athlete of the Week tallied 17 more on Friday to help the Blue Devils set a program scoring record in a 118-51 victory over Burton. Russell added 30 points in Saturday’s finale.
