UC Davis senior distance runner Sarah Sumpter is known to her teammates as Stump.

But as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recognized this week, this Aggie rarely gets stumped in the classroom.

The Greiner Athlete of the Week was named Monday to the 2012 Division I Women’s Cross Country All-Academic squad, the second scholar-athlete award of the year for the psychology major from Cloverdale.

Sumpter was among 115 D-I female athletes to earn the honor after posting a GPA of better than 3.25 and finishing among the top 15 at an NCAA regional.

The Aggie standout has finished second at the last two Big West cross country championship meets after winning the individual title in 2009. This fall, Sumpter followed her conference performance with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA West Regional.
