Greiner Athlete of the Week (5/1/13): DHS soccer player Sophia Hernandez

On the surface, Senior Day for a high school team is about honoring the graduating players. But it’s also about passing the torch to the younger athletes who will lead the squad going forward.

When the Davis High girls soccer team had its Senior Day on Monday, sophomore Sophia Hernandez helped the Blue Devils send the 12th-graders out with a bang.

The Greiner Athlete of the Week scored twice and added a nice assist — to fellow sophomore Jaha McClean — in DHS’ 8-0 victory over Monterey Trail at Yudin Field.

Hernandez showed determination in tallying her first goal just before halftime, blasting a shot that was blocked by a Mustang defender before gathering the rebound and finding the net.

After intermission, Devil senior Jenna Farboud wanted to see more, so she left a perfect set-up for Hernandez, who capitalized for goal No. 2.
