Last week, when the Delta Valley Conference baseball coaches were debating who should be named the league’s Player of the Year, there’s no doubt they looked at the performances of Elk Grove standout Ryan Tellez and Davis High junior Matt Trask throughout the season.
But when it came time to make the decision, a pair of plays Trask made with his bat probably made the difference.
The Greiner Athlete of the Week — who is best known for his abilities on the mound, where he was good enough as a sophomore to make a verbal commitment to UCLA, then went 6-2 with a 1.74 ERA this spring — beat Elk Grove not once but twice with walk-off hits.
On April 12, in the first matchup of the three-game series between the DVC’s top two teams, Trask (who also pitched six innings of two-hit ball) knocked in the winning run with a seventh-inning single.
It was déjà vu last Tuesday, when the DVC’s Player of the Year got another walk-off hit.
