SACRAMENTO — Octavio Guzman scored three minutes into stoppage time on Monday night to extend Sacramento Republic FC’s USL PRO home winning streak to six matches with a 2-1 victory over the Orange County Blues FC in front of another sellout crowd at Bonney Field.
With the win — which came just one day after a 2-1 nonleague loss to Atlas FC at Bonney — the Republic (9-5-2) moved just two points back of the third place L.A. Galaxy II and three points back of the second-place Richmond Kickers.
Monday’s match, which was rescheduled from Friday because of a fire near Cal Expo, started slow until Sacramento finally broke through in the 32nd minute. Forward Justin Braun got behind the defense and put a shot on goal that was blocked by Orange County keeper Patrick McLain to the middle of the box, but Rodrigo Lopez was there to clean up.
OCB equalized just three minutes later when Gabriel Gonzalez sent a shot past the outstretched arm of Republic FC keeper Jake Gleeson to create a 1-1 tie that would last until stoppage time.
That’s when second-half substitute Guzman got a long rebound and sent a 25-foot bullet through two defenders and into the back of the net.
“It’s exciting. I couldn’t believe it at first when it hit the back of the net. I couldn’t describe it, I was just happy,” said Guzman of his goal. “I’m glad I was able to help the team out.”
On Sunday, Sacramento led 1-0 on a Chad Bartlomé 40th-minute tally but saw Atlas score twice in the final 10 minutes of the match.
Republic FC will be back in action on Saturday in a 4 p.m. game at Richmond.
