CLE ELUM, Wash. — Betty Chen shot an opening-round 74 and junior Blair Lewis had the shot of the day with her hole-in-one on the 17th hole as the 13th-seeded UC Davis women’s golf team was in seventh place after Thursday’s opening round of the NCAA West Regional.

The Aggies are making their fifth consecutive regional appearance — this time playing at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort — and looking to finish in the top eight to qualify for the NCAA finals for the second straight season.

On Thursday, they fired a 12-over 300 to finish the day tied with 27th-ranked Iowa State, 16 shots behind top-seeded USC.

Chen’s 2-over 74 paced UCD and put her in a tie for 24th place. Freshman Paige Lee and sophomore Andrea Wong each had 75s and were tied for 35th, Lewis fired a 76 and was tied for 45th and junior Beverly Vatananugulkit was tied for 75th after shooting 78.

Lewis’ ace on the par-3, 165-yard 17th was the talk of the tournament, while Chen had an eagle of her own on the par-4 third hole.

The 37th-ranked Aggies were set to play with Denver and San Diego State Friday morning with the final round scheduled for Saturday.
