Hoops playoffs start Tuesday for Lady Devils

Though they have been champing at the bit since Thursday, the Davis High girls will have to wait out a nearly two-hour drive Tuesday before arriving at Enochs High in Modesto to play their Sac-Joaquin Section basketball tournament opener at 7 p.m.

The Lady Blue Devils (17-9, 7-3 Delta Valley Conference) are seeded 10th, while the defensive-minded Eagles (25-2, 12-0 Modesto Metro Conference) are No. 7 in Division I.

“I don’t know much about (Enochs),” DHS coach Karen Foster said last week, but added, “I feel like we match up well against anybody.”

The game could be a clash of styles as the Devils like to press on defense and run on offense but the Eagles have given up just 36 points a night.

Enochs will have to figure out how to slow down Davis’ Emma Stenz, a junior who led the DVC in scoring (14 ppg) and rebounding (11.7 a night), with classmate Katie Grahn (9.9 ppg) ready to explode at any time. And Foster has the ultimate trust that sophomore point guard Anna Belenis will get the ball exactly where it needs to go.
