I-Cubs hold off River Cats in close affair
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Sacramento River Cats had just four hits on Wednesday, dropping the third in a four-game series at Iowa’s Principal Park, 2-1.
The I-Cubs took the lead in the first inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Edgar Gonzalez, then doubled their advantage when Jae-Hoon Ha blasted a solo home run in the fifth.
An eighth-inning sacrifice fly from Daric Barton, plating Hiro Nakajima, provided the Cats’ only tally. Andy Parrino went 2-for-3 for Sacramento, but Nakajima’s single and a triple by Michael Taylor — his first of the season — were the River Cats’ only other hits.
The strong Iowa pitching performance was paced by winner Casey Coleman (4-3), a spot starter who allowed just one base runner in five innings while striking out five. Marcos Mateo and Zach Rosscup then bridged the gap to Brian Schlitter, who picked up his 17th save of the season.
Cats starter Carlos Hernandez (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings.
Sacramento starting pitcher Bruce Billings (12-5, 3.99 ERA) was set to take the hill for the series finale Thursday morning at 10:05 a.m. The River Cats then head home for five games against Tucson, beginning with a Friday 7:05 p.m. contest.
