Many of the local kids playing Davis Junior Blue Devil football have visions of someday showing their talents in a college setting.
On Saturday, the four DJBD teams will fast-forward their dreams when they play four Sacramento Youth League contests at Aggie Stadium at UC Davis.
The games between the little Blue Devils and visiting Pleasant Grove will kick off at 10 a.m. and represent the end of the regular season.
The whole idea got started when DJBD discovered its normal home venue — Brown Stadium at Davis High — was booked for a field hockey tournament this week.
“I contacted Matt Blankenheim (UCD intercollegiate athletics director of facilities), who was very supportive of the idea,” said Pee Wees head coach Scott Carrell.
Once the plan was hatched, P.J. Kelly of the university’s Conference and Event Services got on board and, ultimately, Athletic Director Terry Tumey gave the day of youth football his blessing.
Carrell said the athletic department “viewed this as a way to help give back to the community.” Carrell added. “(Blankenheim and Kelly) were fantastic throughout the process.
“The entire organization — players, coaches and board are very excited about the event,” Carrell continued. “When I first told my players, I’m not sure they 100 percent believed me.”
In addition to the four games, the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh is scheduled to perform about 1:30 p.m., between the Pee Wees and Junior Midgets outings.
Admission is $5, but parking (in the lot south of the facility off Hutchison Drive) is free. Concessions will be run by DJBD and entrance is through the stadium’s southwest entrance.
The youthful Blue Devils will have use of the big scoreboard and organization volunteers will do the announcing.
Notes: Game times for Saturday are: Junior Pee Wees (10 a.m.), Pee Wees (noon), Junior Midgets (2 p.m.) and Midgets (4 p.m.). … While UC Davis linebacker Jonathan Bias will be hard at work playing for the Aggies at Montana State that afternoon, his little brother Jacob will play in the Pee Wees game for Pleasant Grove. Whoever wins that contest goes to the SYF Division I playoffs. … Both the Eagles and Devils have secured Midgets postseason berths, but the winner on Saturday earns the higher seed. … Carrell is an associate professor in the department of economics at UCD.
