A three-game sweep by the Davis High junior varsity baseball squad pushed its season record to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in Delta Valley Conference play.

DVC wins over Franklin on April 8 and last Thursday then a 4-1 Friday decision against Vintage were a mix of good pitching, solid defense and timely offense.

In a 14-4 mercy-rule win at Franklin, the Blue Devils used a seven-run sixth inning to put things out of reach.

Solomon Biers-Ariel drove in three runs, Tyler Gibson, Hunter Jury and Alex Timmons all collected two hits while Biers-Ariel, Gibson, Gabe Gutierrez, Jacob Avila and James Richardson scored two times apiece.

Gibson pitched three strong innings (one earned run) with Noah Riffle and Jake Guerrero supplying stifling relief.

Then, while allowing only two hits in five innings of work, Pierce Tujo struck out six as host DHS routed Franklin, 10-0.

Daniel Henrickson drove in three Devil runs with a sacrifice fly and single and Gibson’s two hits (including a double) came with two RBIs.

Gutierrez and Richardson doubled and singled, each scoring twice. Jury and Avila added singles in the 11-hit assault.

Riffle and Ray Young pitched scoreless relief innings.

In a nonleague tilt, visiting Vintage was held to three hits by starter Henrickson, Young, Riffle and Gutierrez.

Henrickson allow one single and walked only one in four innings on the hill.

Meanwhile, Avila’s two hits drove in three Davis runs and Jury had an RBI and a run scored on two singles. Gutierrez doubled and scored two times.

Avila is now batting .607. Mason Shorts (.543) and Gibson (.500) have added offensive fuel to the Blue Devils, who are hitting .423 as a team.

DHS JV girls soccer

A win and a tie last week in Delta Valley Conference play kept the Blue Devils at 14-0-3.

After beating Elk Grove, 2-0, on April 7, DHS completed the first round of conference play undefeated and unscored upon.

In that contest, the Devils threatened twice early on, then finally broke through late in the first half as Kate Bosco received a pass from A.J. Scheisari, then broke free on the right wing and fired a shot that the keeper could not handle for a 1-0 Davis lead.

That goal turned out to be all the locals needed as their defense consistently repelled the Thundering Herd attack. Still, the Blue Devils got some insurance midway through the second half when Bhavna Kodira worked free on the right wing with some determined dribbling and fired in a hard shot that deflected off an Elk Grove defender into the goal.

Later, the shutout was preserved when DHS keeper Kristen Chastain sprinted out to close down a Herd forward who got behind the last defender. The attacker managed a weak shot that was rolling toward the open net until Devil defender Willa Moffatt sprinted in to sweep it away just before the goal line.

Playing at Franklin last Wednesday, Davis fell behind 1-0 in the first half.

But with their undefeated season on the line, the Blue Devils came out in the second half with more energy and intensity, pressuring the goal with strong shots by Hannah Deknikker and Mackenzie Quick and dangerous corner kicks by Tiffany Miras and Maggie Whittemore. DHS finally scored the equalizer when Miras received a great pass out of the back from defender Megan Klisiewicz, then dribbled to create shooting space near the top of the box and hit a low shot that caught the keeper out of position.

Klisiewicz’s defense was stellar as she helped keep the game tied as did Jordan Callahan, who returned from four weeks of injury to play a well.

DHS JV boys lacrosse

The Blue Devils posted two recent victories — a dramatic 12-11 nod over St. Mary’s and a rout of Jesuit on Break the Record Night.

Sean Gellen and Justin Reno each tallied five goals in the win over the Rams, while Gellen also won 17 of 25 face-offs.

“Justin had the most complete game of the season,” coach Loren Silverstein said afterward.

Defensively, Paul Buhlman was strong with four takeaways and Miles Herget had seven saves between the pipes. Noah Lockard and Jake Griffiths also were stellar on defense.

With the game tied 5-5 at intermission, Reno, Gellen and Connor Amesbury scored third-period goals to put DHS up 8-7 before St. Mary’s nailed three straight net-benders to go up again.

However, Gellen, Reno and Tom Thornton each got late goals to get the job done.

Buhlman, Lockhart and Griffiths closed the door defensively.

DHS JV girls lacrosse

The Blue Devils (3-7) played tough but lost away games to Granite Bay (20-3) and Christian Brothers (13-7) last week.

In the league outing against GBHS, the Grizzlies got off to a quick start with four unanswered goals.

The teams then traded tallies, with Isabella Babich scoring first for DHS followed by Hanah Wyman, to make the score 5-2.

But that was as close as the locals got as Granite Bay led 12-2 at the half.

After the break, Jeannie Kim’s goal capped the Devil scoring.

The setback to Christian Brothers, however, was much closer than the score indicated.

Davis goals from Chloe Nicolet, Babich, Abbey Eaton and Audrey Zenner kept the game tight, with the Blue Devils trailing just 5-4 at intermission.

The Falcons opened the second half with a couple of goals before Isabel Realyvasquez — who coach Lisa Branch said “played a terrific all-around game” — cut the deficit to 7-5.

The teams then traded goals with Esther Wang scoring twice for DHS to make it 8-7, before Christian Brothers then closed with five straight tallies.

Despite the loss, Branch praised the play of goalies Taryn Spore (four saves) and Sophia Hahn (three).

DHS frosh/soph track

Henry Zhang, Ben Easton and Mason Chupka went 1-2-3 in the triple jump as the Blue Devils had a strong frosh-soph showing in Saturday’s Halden Invitational at Brown Stadium.

While no team scoring was kept, local athletes had a handful of impressive performances.

Zhang’s 38-03.5 was the best triple-jump effort with Easton (37-07.75) and Chupka (36-08.75) following suit.

Chupka also went 42.35 in the 300 hurdles, good for second.

DHS’ Emily Meyer and Isabella Chiaravalloti both went 8-06 in the pole vault with Meyer earning the first-place nod.

In the boys 800-meter event, Devil Jackson Laird went 2:07.23 to capture the gold.

Sprinter Abby McIntyre — whose brother Alex won the varsity 200 and 400 races — took second in the F/S 100 (13.22) and third in the 200 (27.87).

Davis high jumpers Anthony DiCarlo (5-06) and Kevin Austin (5-04) took second and third in that event.

Claudia Robinson’s 2:31.66 was good for second in the 800 run.
