JV/frosh roundup: Younger harriers have their way at subsections

Just as their varsity counterparts did at last Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Subsection cross country meet, Davis High’s junior varsity, freshman and sophomore runners all had great success in their races.

The goal entering the meet was for Blue Devil teams in all divisions to advance to Friday’s section championships and the goal was achieved. In all, 50 DHS cross country runners advanced to sections, as all three underclass teams placed in the top two in their events.

The sophomore boys, led by Daniel Rowan’s first-place finish (11:20), won their two-mile race with 31 points, defeating 12 other teams. Jasper Laca was the next Devil finisher, placing third in 11:52, with Matthew Mayr (fifth, 11:55), John Britton (seventh, 12:00), Gavin Monges (15th, 12:20), John Conant (16th, 12:20) and Avery Krovetz (30th, 12:44) rounding out the top seven. Close behind Krovetz was Davis’ Diego Rodriguez (32nd), who qualified to the section meet as an individual with his time of 12:46.

Both the JV and the freshman boys teams finished in second place at the subsections. Finishing one point behind Bella Vista, the JV’s saw Ethan Hall take third on the three-mile course in 16:49. John Testerman (fifth, 17:10), Reinert Toft (seventh, 17:20) and William Young (11th, 17:25) all packed well as the next DHS finishers, with Andrew Diaz (35th, 18:04), Sean Lee (45th, 18:29) and Shane Pesis (53rd, 18:52) completing the Blue Devils’ top seven.

The Davis freshman boys’ point total of 48 wasn’t far behind first-place Lincoln, which won with 42 points. Blake Croft won the two-mile race with a time of 11:44, Charlie Harris had a great race, placing ninth in 12:30 and Ben Salcedo (11th, 12:45), Mikkel Wilson (13th, 12:48) and Torin Halsted (14th; 12:49) finished within seconds of each other to take the next spots. Nathan Leyva (19th, 12:57) and Tim Baxter (20th, 12:58) completed the local scoring.

Both the Devil JV girls squad and frosh/soph girls team placed second behind St Francis, as coach Bill Gregg noted that the junior varsity girls especially stepped it up and ran some of their best races of the season. Grace Calhoun led the pack, placing ninth on the three-mile course in 22:27. The next four DHS runners — Monica Leflore (23:12), Destiny Smith (23:20), Samantha Fung (23:30) and Victoria Mohtes-Chan (23:25) — packed together and finished 23rd through 26th. Amelia Duplantier (48th, 25:05) and Kelly McWilliams (54th, 25:31) rounded out Davis’ top seven.

Jeanne-Marie McPherson was the top runner for the Blue Devil frosh/soph girls, placing fourth by finishing the two-mile race in 13:38. Teammates Katherine Dimond (11th, 14:03), Giulia McIsaac (12th, 14:04) and Suleikha Sutter (14th, 14:04) packed together perfectly, finishing within one second of each other, while Zoe Juanitas (21st, 14:42), Siena Cox (38th, 15:04) and Dilara Tezcan (66th, 16:09) also placed for DHS.

DHS volleyball splits two

Elk Grove fell, 25-21, 21-25, 15-5, on Oct. 31 before the Blue Devil junior varsity volleyball team finished the season by dropping a 25-14, 25-23 decision at Franklin last Wednesday.

“It was nice to see the team come back and play so strong in (the Elk Grove win),” said DHS coach Lyndsay Cantrell. “We were behind six points in the first game and battled back to win, so it was nice to see the girls (so) determined.”

Zoe Hunt-Murray drew Cantrell’s praise for a complete game:

“All season we have been working on the timing of her approach when she goes in to hit. It just never clicked right; she was too early or late. She still did her job … (but in the second-to-last game), the pieces finally came together and she was smashing the ball. She showed everyone what we all knew she could do.”

Cantrell said her team was sad to end on a loss, but added there were plenty of great moments in 2011.

“(When) I look back on where this team started and how it progressed so well through the season … that puts a smile on my face,” she reported. “This was a fun group of girls to coach. Ultimately, I am happy with the team’s performance and am looking forward to watching these girls as they advance over the next couple of years.”
