By dominating the early rounds of Thursday’s Delta Valley Conference doubles tournament, the Davis High girls made the semifinal and final rounds seem like a Blue Devil team get-together.
All three DHS duos made the semifinals before top-seeded Anna Klavins and Caron Miller topped teammates Ceci Cajandig and Megan Williams, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, (10-4) in the finals to capture the DVC title.
“Anna and Caron are both strong singles players, which doesn’t always mean they will mesh when it comes to doubles,” said Davis coach Sally Hosley. “(Thursday), they came together and made it work, which enabled them to take the title.
“It was a strong showing by all the girls (Thursday). The finals could have gone either way. In fact, when they split sets, I asked them if they wanted to ro-sham-bo for the third set. They laughed, gave it some thought, and declined.”
Cajandig and Williams were seeded third, but were able to defeat the No. 2 seed from Elk Grove, 7-5, 6-2, to set up the all-Devil final. They beat Monterey Trails’ top team in the quarterfinals.
“Ceci and Megan proved to be an incredibly strong No. 3 seed,” Hosley said. “They are both smart doubles players, which behooved them in all their matches.”
The third Davis team, Layla Hanson and Jasmin Mould, defeated a Franklin duo, 6-1, 6-0, and a squad from Laguna Creek, 3-6, 6-2, (10-2), before falling to Klavins/Miller.
“Overall, it was a great performance by all three teams. They all made it to the semis, which qualified them to be all-league,” Hosley said.
With these results, and the second-place finish by Inés Guinard in Tuesday’s DVC singles tournament, Klavins/Miller, Cajandig/Williams and Guinard will all play in the Sac-Joaquin Section individual singles and doubles tournaments next Thursday and Friday in Turlock.
But first, the Blue Devils will host a section playoff match on Tuesday at 2 p.m. DHS will open against either Lincoln (Stockton) or West.
