Down by five entering the final period on Tuesday at The Cage, the Davis High girls basketball team took its game to the next level, outscoring 11th-seeded Napa by 11 to win a Sac-Joaquin Section first round playoff contest, 52-46.
On Thursday night, the sixth-seeded Lady Blue Devils (23-4) will need to remain at that high level of play as they head to Sacramento to take on No. 3 Kennedy in the second round.
It’s DHS’ first time getting past the first round of the section playoffs since reaching the quarterfinals of the 2007 tournament.
The Delta Valley Conference champion Devils are paced by the league’s player of the year in senior Ashleigh Vandenbrink, who had a game-high 15 points against Napa. She is supported by a talented cast of that includes seniors Tori Powell and Kylie Drexel; sophomores Emma Stenz, Caitlin Mazzoleni and Katie Grahn; and freshmen Rachael Allison and Anna Belenis, among others.
The Cougars (22-5), who took second in the Metro League behind Sacramento and haven’t lost to anyone but the Dragons (twice) since Dec. 28, eliminated Enochs, 51-33, on Tuesday. Kennedy is led by 5-foot-10 senior Lynette Johnson’s 17 points and seven rebounds per game.
