This week’s picks are as follows:
OREGON over STANFORD (Nov. 7) … yes, this game isn’t until next Thursday, but neither team plays this weekend in order to be fully prepared for this long-anticipated showdown. There have been only a handful of teams in college football history as deep and talented as these Ducks. Stanford is capable, but Oregon is on another planet.
ARIZONA over CAL … one of the worst Cal teams in school history continues on its futile path, hoping that a win over equally struggling Colorado (Nov. 16) can salvage an otherwise woeful season.
FLORIDA STATE over MIAMI (Fla.) … both teams are unbeaten as we enter November, but this one won’t be close. The Seminoles are playing as if they’re back in the Bobby Bowden days.
FRESNO STATE over NEVADA … the Bulldogs hope to build enough momentum to finally earn a BCS bowl bid.
MICHIGAN STATE over MICHIGAN … nobody outside of Ann Arbor or East Lansing cares much about this one in 2013.
MONTANA over SAC STATE … the Hornets learn once again how far they are from the top rung of the Big Sky Conference.
TEXAS over KANSAS … the Mack Brown save-my-job tour continues with a stop in Lawrence, where lopsided losses on the gridiron have become a way of life.
UPSET OF THE WEEK: USC over Oregon State … two steadily improving teams face the music in Corvallis, where the Trojans have had considerable trouble in recent years. (Upset record: 2-7).
ROUT OF THE WEEK: Eastern Washington over Idaho State … the Eagles are soaring, which means another national championship may be in their future. (Rout record: 9-0).
DON’T BET ON IT, BUT: Notre Dame over Navy … for some unexplained reason, the Irish frequently struggle against the Midshipmen. (Don’t bet record: 6-3).
FIVE EASY PICKS: It’s getting tougher and tougher as the Bakery League and its roster of cream puffs stop playing the big boys, but this week’s sure winners are Ohio State (over Purdue), Northern Illinois (over Massachusetts), Texas A&M (over Texas-El Paso), Toledo (over Eastern Michigan) and UCLA (over Colorado). (FEP record: 45-0.)
AGGIES over CAL POLY … the annual Battle of the Mustangs is guaranteed to bring out the best in both clubs. Heck, you take the state of Montana out of the equation and the Aggies could be fighting for their first Big Sky title. Take the Ags by 3 and don’t leave early.
OTHER GAMES: Clemson over Virginia, Georgia over Florida, Nebraska over Northwestern, Kansas State over Iowa State, TCU over West Virginia, Louisiana-Lafayette over New Mexico State, Auburn over Arkansas, East Carolina over Florida International, Missouri over Tennessee, Oklahoma State over Texas Tech, Georgia Tech over Pittsburgh, Kentucky over Alabama State, Wisconsin over Iowa, Virginia Tech over Boston College, Rutgers over Temple, Penn State over Illinois, South Carolina over Mississippi State, Marshall over Southern Mississippi, San Jose State over UNLV, San Diego State over New Mexico, Boise State over Colorado State, and Utah State over Hawaii.
Last week: 32-6, season: 321-61, percentage: .840.
