Loss to Grant took its toll on the Devils

When a 175-pound center goes up against a 355-pound nose tackle, itÕs, well, itÕs just unthinkable.

But when Davis HighÕs Lucas Brattesani matched up with GrantÕs Villimi Maolo last Friday, the end result was a wash Ñ of sorts.

The scrappy senior limited the Pacer Tongan Avalanche to five tackles and only two sacks. No, Brattesani didnÕt handle Maolo. But he didnÕt get smoked, either.

However, after the game, Brattesani was worn out.

As the week went on, he found he was paying the price.

ÒItÕs my back. ItÕs all tight,Ó Brattesani, wearing streets clothes, said while watching WednesdayÕs Blue Devil practice.

ÒWill I miss the game Friday? Heck, no. IÕm playing. IÕm not going to miss that one,Ó Brattesani promised after being asked his status for Senior Night against Elk Grove.

Brattesani is one player in a long line of banged-up DHS footballers…

The two most devastating reports from the Grant aftermath are that versatile Dane Denkers (knee) is out for good, and defensive whiz Brent Martin (concussion) probably will miss the DevilsÕ last home game Friday.

ÒItÕs amazing, isnÕt it?Ó Davis head coach Steve Smyte said Wednesday. ÒLook ..Ó

With five guys Ñ including Jacob Schroeder, Courtney Williams and Brian Stabenfeldt Ñ watching from the bench, the Devils sports just 23 healthy players during warmups Wednesday.

As familiar as the scene has been this year, this marks the first time the Devils have dipped to under 26 in uniform.

Tailback Williams plans to play again, although Smyte figures his role will be limited. Stabenfeldt is iffy and Schroeder has missed his junior year due to his preseason knee injury.

ÒWeÕll figure a way,Ó Brattesani told a teammate. ÒBy the way, you guys at The Enterprise need to get it right. (Maolo) is bigger than you said.Ó

We only go by the program, Lucas.Devils
