FRESNO — Facing a talented quartet of baseball teams at the Buchanan elite tournament last weekend, the Davis High summer squad opened with an exciting win over West Ranch before dropping its next three outings.
Starting pitcher Kris Prince went the distance for the locals in that 5-4 victory, keeping the Blue Devils close until Jared McNece beat out an infield single to plate Nate Curtis with the winning run.
Curtis and Andrew Bolich each went 3-for-4 in that contest.
Next up for DHS was a slugfest that eventually went to Central High, 11-10. The Devils got two hits each from Andrew Walker, McNece and Drew Gnos, who doubled.
Davis posted good pitching performances in the next two games, but each was a 6-3 loss.
Against Dana Hills, Walter Bolle and Tyler Gibson — who added a pair of hits — each threw well, while Ryan Kreidler was 2-for-4 with a double. Bolich also went 2-for-4.
In the final-game loss to Moorpark, Peter Frame and Ian Miramontes combined on the hill and Curtis blasted a double.
“It was a great tournament to play against good competition,” said Blue Devil coach Dan Ariola.
DHS will play at home this weekend, starting with a Saturday 3 p.m. matchup against De La Salle. Archbishop Mitty then comes to town Sunday for a 9:30 a.m. doubleheader.
