TACOMA, Wash. — Luke Montz went 4-for-5, was just a triple short of the cycle, and knocked in all six Sacramento runs on Tuesday afternoon as the River Cats knocked off Tacoma, 6-2, in a Pacific Coast League series finale at Cheney Stadium.
The Cats (33-26) got it going early as Jemile Weeks and Grant Green led off the game with back-to-back singles. After an out, Montz brought both runners home with a doubled to left-center field.
Montz blasted a three-run homer in the fifth inning — driving in Green and Scott Moore — then plated Weeks with a single in the sixth.
The Rainiers only run production came in the bottom of the seventh when, after Sacramento starter Travis Banwart exited the game, two unearned runs crossed the plate.
Banwart had one of his best outings of the season, striking out eight in six shutout innings with two hits and four walks.
Weeks and Green each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Montz is now hitting .323 with six home runs and 18 RBIs.
The win gave the River Cats a series sweep and set up a tie with Tucson — their next opponent — at the top of the PCL’s Pacific South Division. The four-game road series against the T-Pads begins Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
