WEST SACRAMENTO — Making his first start as Sacramento’s second baseman, Hiro Nakajima drove in both the game-tying and go-ahead runs to give the River Cats a 3-2 victory over New Orleans on Monday at Raley Field.
Nakajima also had a hand in the Cats’ other run as he walked in front of Grant Green, who followed with a groundout that allowed Jemile Weeks to score from third in the bottom of the first inning.
The Zephyrs took the lead in the third, scoring twice on back-to-back RBI singles from Bryan Peterson and former River Cat Kevin Kouzmanoff.
But in the fifth inning, Nakajima singled home Scott Moore to tie the game at 2-2, and two frames later, Nakajima put Sacramento ahead for good. He grounded into a double play that allowed Moore to score.
Later, Green led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, snapping a streak of 24 innings without an extra-base hit by the River Cats.
Also on Monday, Cats right-hander Bruce Billings was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week.
Billings went 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA, 16 strikeouts and three walks in 13 innings pitched in that span. The two starts lowered Billings’ ERA on the year from 7.20 to 4.97, and brought his record to 4-2.
