SANTA ROSA — The Davis High boys soccer team had plenty of offensive opportunities on Saturday, but had to settle for only two goals as it bowed out of the Bay City Invitational after four games, according to coach Ashley Yudin.
On Saturday, host Montgomery High nudged past the Blue Devils, 2-1, thanks to a late penalty kick. Davis (2-1-1) had earlier tied the game when Matt Austin converted.
Yudin said defender Connor Anderson, a junior, played well in defeat.
In the finale for DHS, Roseland Prep tied the locals, 1-1.
“That was a horrible game for us,” Yudin told The Enterprise. “Hopefully we got that out of the way before the real season starts.”
Chris Mulvihill scored the Davis goal.
Opening the two-day tournament on Friday with a 1-0 triumph over Terra Linda (San Rafael), the Blue Devils made the cut in the 16-team field by stopping Casa Grande (Petaluma), 2-0, later in the day.
Yudin liked the efforts of senior Hyato Kawaguchi — recently moved to forward.
“He had a great couples of games, including scoring one of the two goals in that second game,” Yudin said
After wing Ryan Gross’ goal stood tall in the first game, Tom Nolan and Kawaguchi closed out Casa Grande with a second-half goal each.
Nolan, nursing an ankle injury coming in, was knocked out of the Terra Linda contest when he got whacked on the ouchy limb.
Yudin said Nolan told him “he felt OK and could go,” so he played a mighty role in the second contest.
Yudin added that his team will “have to figure out how to score. Especially (Saturday) we didn’t have that person to finish it.”
Marin Academy comes to town Monday for a 4 p.m. contest with the Devils. On Wednesday, DHS hosts Napa (4 p.m.).
