Competing in the scenic vineyards of Muller Ranch on Saturday, the Davis High boys and girls cross country teams ran to second-place finishes at the Yolo County Championships.
With the Blue Devil girls missing several key runners for the ACT test and illness, DHS ran conservatively. Still, Devil sophomore Fiona O’Keeffe won the race with a course-record time of 18:53, while freshman Sofia Castiglioni established herself as a varsity runner by placing fifth in 19:42.
Maggie McManis (ninth place), Giulia McIsaac (15th) and Claire Dicker (21st) rounded out Davis’ top five with Jeanne-Marie McPherson, Pooja Tripathi and Zoe Juanitas also running well. The locals finished just seven points behind first-place St. Francis, a team the Blue Devils will see this weekend at the prestigious Stanford Invitational.
Later Saturday, with rain beginning to fall and course conditions deteriorating, the DHS boys ran in a pack for a controlled tempo pace through most of the race. The top four Devil runners — Gavin Monges, Charlie Harris, Nick Borowsky and Ben Roberts — crossed the finish line in the 6-9 positions, all finishing within seconds of Monges’ time of 18:07.
Davis’ Blake Croft finished 10 seconds behind the front pack, placing 14th, with Ani Ramakrishnan, Alex Arnheiter and Kian Tanner rounding out the local crew. The Blue Devil boys were just two points behind first-place Placer High, 44-42.
