Chris Carter’s third hit of the game was a double in the 10th inning. Michael Taylor’s second safety was an RBI single that brought Carter home with what turned out to be the winning run.
Carter crossed the plate in the 10th with the first run for either team since the top of the fifth inning, as the Sacramento bullpen threw five scoreless frames to help the River Cats top Tucson on Tuesday, 4-3.
After Cats starter Doug Mathis finished a solid outing by holding the Padres without a run in for the fifth and sixth innings, Fautino De Los Santos followed with a scoreless frame of relief. Sacramento’s Trystan Magnuson (3-2) put up two more zeros on the board to earn the victory and Vinnie Chulk shut Tucson down with two strikeouts in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn his third save.
The first-place River Cats (47-26) got a great offensive performance from Carter, as the first baseman had RBIs in the first and fifth innings before scoring the game-winning run. He finished with three hits including a double.
Josh Donaldson scored on both of Carter’s RBIs, each time after doubling, and also had three hits.
Sacramento scored its other run in the top of the second inning, when Taylor got his other hit and eventually stole home. That put the Cats up 2-1.
After Tucson (33-40) crossed the plate twice to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, Carter brought Donaldson home the second time to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth. Neither team scored again until the extra frame.
The River Cats and Padres will match up again Wednesday in Tucson (7 p.m.) in the second of a four-game series.
