Raber captures Pacific Coast Amateur title

WEST VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Tyler Raber, who finished his UC Davis career this past spring, fired a 2-over 72 on Friday, finishing 8 under overall and claiming the prestigious 47th Pacific Coast Amateur title by three strokes at Capilano Golf and Country Club.

Raber, from El Macero, finished with a 272 total, beating the University of San Francisco’s Cory McElyea, who shot 70 and finished second at 275. Jonathan Sanders, from the University of Washington, tied for third with Eric Sugimoto of the University of the Pacific at 276.

Raber, who advanced to the NCAA Pullman Regional in May, opened the tournament with a spectacular round of 7-under 63 on Tuesday before following with rounds of 67 and 70 over the next two days. That gave him a five-shot lead entering Friday’s final round.

He had two birdies over his last 14 holes. He picked up the first on the par-5 third hole — the fourth straight day he birdied the hole — and then added his second birdie of the week on the par-4 10th hole.

The win was another achievement for Raber, who was twice named to the All-Big West first team and earned three all-conference honors overall. He was the lone American to advance to the round of 16 at last year’s British Amateur Championship and also captured the 109th Trans-Mississippi Championship.

Raber is among the top 300 amateur players in the world, according to the Men’s World Amateur Golf Rankings.
